Nova Road (State Road (S.R.) 5A) at Miles Drive Median Modifications
Volusia County
Financial Project Identification (FPID) No.: 992100-4
Dear Property Owner:
On February 3, 2022, The Florida Department of Transportation held a public meeting regarding a proposal to install safety improvements at the intersection of Nova Road at Miles Drive, in Volusia County. The proposed safety improvements included the installation of a raised bi-directional median at the subject intersection to help with preventing angle crashes. At the public meeting, we heard concerns from several residents regarding the proposed changes and many also requested a more thorough evaluation with a special emphasis on determining if a traffic signal could be warranted. Additional concerns mentioned the need for crosswalks at this intersection, and for an improvement that could provide drivers with safer access onto Nova Road from Miles Drive during peak hours of the day.
The Department’s new study found that a traffic signal at the intersection of Nova Road and Miles Drive is warranted at this time. The installation of a traffic signal should help reduce the number of left-turn and angle crashes and provide a location for pedestrians and bicyclists to safely cross Nova Road.
Since a traffic signal is now proposed at the subject intersection, the previously recommended median modification is no longer under consideration. Additionally, we have begun a scoping effort to determine the challenges of building a traffic signal at this location. The budget for design and construction is still to be determined at this time. Our early estimated timeline for this project includes beginning design activities in calendar year 2023 and starting construction 18 months to 24 months after design starts. Future updates regarding this traffic signal project will be posted at https://www.cflroads.com/project/992100-4.
