About

The Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) and Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange provides a vital gateway to some of Central Florida’s biggest attractions. The interchange is being reconstructed as a diverging diamond (DDI). Unlike a conventional interchange, the lanes in a DDI cross over to the left side of the roadway at a traffic signal. This limits the number of traffic signal phases and allows drivers to make left turns without crossing oncoming traffic. The lanes then cross back to the right side of the road at another traffic signal.

The project is also reconfiguring and lengthening ramps at the interchange and improving capacity on Sand Lake Road and Turkey Lake Road.

new loop ramp system opened in May 2026, eliminating left turns from westbound Sand Lake Road to southbound Turkey Lake Road. The loop ramp system provides a direct connection to Turkey Lake Road from westbound Sand Lake Road and westbound I-4.

In addition, the project includes reconstructing the I-4 general use lanes from west of Sand Lake Road to the end of the I-4 Ultimate project. Two westbound, barrier-separated, express lanes are being built from west of Sand Lake Road to connect to the existing express lanes near Kirkman Road. These will transition to a single, buffer-separated express lane in the westbound direction from west of Sand Lake Road and tie in just west of Central Florida Parkway. This express lane will be constructed in three separate projects, with the finished lane extending from west of Sand Lake Road to west of S.R. 536.

Construction began in Spring 2023 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2027. This project is being constructed in conjunction with FPID No. 444315-3, the combined construction cost is $219,342,910.12

Lane Closures
  • The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement overnight closures of the eastbound Interstate 4 (I-4) exit ramp to Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) at Exit 74A on the following dates:

    • Sunday, August 16, through Tuesday, August 18 – 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • Wednesday, August 19, and Thursday, August 20 – 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The final closure will end the morning of Friday, August 21. These closures are necessary for crews to shift traffic onto the new eastbound I-4 exit ramp to Sand Lake Road, and for barrier wall and light pole installation.

Crews plan to shift traffic onto the new ramp as early as Tuesday morning, August 18.

See detour information below and attached detour map.

Detour for Eastbound I-4 Exit Ramp to Sand Lake Road

Motorists traveling on eastbound I-4 who wish to access Sand Lake Road (Exit 74A) will continue east and take Exit 75A to Universal Boulevard. From there, turn right onto southbound Universal Boulevard and proceed to Sand Lake Road.

FDOT advises motorists to follow all posted detour signs. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
