About

The Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) and Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange provides a vital gateway to some of Central Florida’s biggest attractions. The interchange is being reconstructed as a diverging diamond (DDI). Unlike a conventional interchange, the lanes in a DDI cross over to the left side of the roadway at a traffic signal. This limits the number of traffic signal phases and allows drivers to make left turns without crossing oncoming traffic. The lanes then cross back to the right side of the road at another traffic signal.

The project is also reconfiguring and lengthening ramps at the interchange and improving capacity on Sand Lake Road and Turkey Lake Road.

new loop ramp system opened in May 2026, eliminating left turns from westbound Sand Lake Road to southbound Turkey Lake Road. The loop ramp system provides a direct connection to Turkey Lake Road from westbound Sand Lake Road and westbound I-4.

In addition, the project includes reconstructing the I-4 general use lanes from west of Sand Lake Road to the end of the I-4 Ultimate project. Two westbound, barrier-separated, express lanes are being built from west of Sand Lake Road to connect to the existing express lanes near Kirkman Road. These will transition to a single, buffer-separated express lane in the westbound direction from west of Sand Lake Road and tie in just west of Central Florida Parkway. This express lane will be constructed in three separate projects, with the finished lane extending from west of Sand Lake Road to west of S.R. 536.

Construction began in Spring 2023 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2027. This project is being constructed in conjunction with FPID No. 444315-3, the combined construction cost is $219,342,910.12

Lane Closures
  • The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement intermittent overnight closures of the left-turn lanes from eastbound Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) to northbound Turkey Lake Road from Sunday, August 9, through Thursday, August 13. The closures are scheduled to begin as early as 11 p.m. each night and reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning, with the final closure ending the morning of Friday, August 14.

These closures are necessary for force main installation along Sand Lake Road through the Turkey Lake Road intersection as part of the Interstate 4 (I-4) and Sand Lake Road interchange improvement project.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. To stay up to date on the schedule for this work, sign up for advanced construction alerts at I4Beyond.com/Alerts.

Detour: Eastbound Sand Lake Road to Northbound Turkey Lake Road

From eastbound Sand Lake Road, turn right onto southbound Turkey Lake Road. From there, turn right onto westbound Lake Marie Way. Turn left onto eastbound Sand Lake Sound Road and then left again onto northbound Turkey Lake Road.

This work is part of the ongoing improvement project at the I-4 and Sand Lake Road interchange. For more information on this project, visit I4Beyond.com/SandLake.

  • The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement intermittent overnight traffic pacing operations at the intersection of Turkey Lake Road and Sand Lake Sound Road on the morning of Wednesday, August 12. This operation is expected to begin at 1 a.m. and end by 6 a.m. the same morning.

During the pacing operation, law enforcement will stop traffic at five-minute intervals to allow crews to safely work in the intersection.

This pacing operation is necessary to replace traffic signal mast arms at the intersection as part of the ongoing improvements at the Interstate 4 (I-4) and Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) interchange.

Note: If this work is not completed on Wednesday, August 12, then Friday, August 14, will serve as the backup date for this work during the same hours.

Motorists should follow all posted signs, plan for extra travel time, and consider alternative routes. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
