About
The Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) and Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange provides a vital gateway to some of Central Florida’s biggest attractions. The interchange is being reconstructed as a diverging diamond (DDI). Unlike a conventional interchange, the lanes in a DDI cross over to the left side of the roadway at a traffic signal. This limits the number of traffic signal phases and allows drivers to make left turns without crossing oncoming traffic. The lanes then cross back to the right side of the road at another traffic signal.
The project is also reconfiguring and lengthening ramps at the interchange and improving capacity on Sand Lake Road and Turkey Lake Road.
A new loop ramp system opened in May 2026, eliminating left turns from westbound Sand Lake Road to southbound Turkey Lake Road. The loop ramp system provides a direct connection to Turkey Lake Road from westbound Sand Lake Road and westbound I-4.
In addition, the project includes reconstructing the I-4 general use lanes from west of Sand Lake Road to the end of the I-4 Ultimate project. Two westbound, barrier-separated, express lanes are being built from west of Sand Lake Road to connect to the existing express lanes near Kirkman Road. These will transition to a single, buffer-separated express lane in the westbound direction from west of Sand Lake Road and tie in just west of Central Florida Parkway. This express lane will be constructed in three separate projects, with the finished lane extending from west of Sand Lake Road to west of S.R. 536.
Construction began in Spring 2023 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2027. This project is being constructed in conjunction with FPID No. 444315-3, the combined construction cost is $219,342,910.12

Lane Closures
-
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement an overnight closure of the eastbound Interstate 4 (I-4) entrance ramp at Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) on Sunday, July 26. The closure is scheduled to begin as early as 10 p.m. and reopen by 6 a.m. on the morning of Monday, July 27.
This closure is necessary to install barrier wall on eastbound I-4 near Universal Boulevard.
NOTE: If this work is not completed on the night of Sunday, July 26, the night of Monday, July 27 will serve as a backup date for this work.
Detours for Eastbound I-4 Entrance Ramp from Sand Lake Road
- During the ramp closure, motorists west of I-4 on Sand Lake Road can head north on Turkey Lake Road, turn right onto eastbound Hollywood Way, and then turn right onto southbound Universal Boulevard to access eastbound I-4.
- Motorists east of I-4 on Sand Lake Road who wish to access eastbound I-4 should head north on International Drive and turn left onto northbound Universal Boulevard, then proceed to the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp.
FDOT advises motorists to follow all posted detour signs. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement intermittent overnight closures of the left-turn lanes from eastbound Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) to northbound Turkey Lake Road from Sunday, July 26 through Wednesday, July 29. The closures are scheduled to begin as early as 11 p.m. each night and reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning, with the final closure ending the morning of Thursday, July 30.
These closures are necessary for force main installation along Sand Lake Road through the Turkey Lake Road intersection as part of the Interstate 4 (I-4) and Sand Lake Road interchange improvement project.
NOTE: During daytime hours beginning Monday, July 27, crews will continuously close the inside left-turn lane from eastbound Sand Lake Road to northbound Turkey Lake Road to facilitate the work during these dates. On the morning of Thursday, July 30, crews will partially open portions of the left-turn lane movements as the force main installation work continues.
