About

The Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) and Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange provides a vital gateway to some of Central Florida’s biggest attractions. The interchange is being reconstructed as a diverging diamond (DDI). Unlike a conventional interchange, the lanes in a DDI cross over to the left side of the roadway at a traffic signal. This limits the number of traffic signal phases and allows drivers to make left turns without crossing oncoming traffic. The lanes then cross back to the right side of the road at another traffic signal.

The project is also reconfiguring and lengthening ramps at the interchange and improving capacity on Sand Lake Road and Turkey Lake Road.

new loop ramp system opened in May 2026, eliminating left turns from westbound Sand Lake Road to southbound Turkey Lake Road. The loop ramp system provides a direct connection to Turkey Lake Road from westbound Sand Lake Road and westbound I-4.

In addition, the project includes reconstructing the I-4 general use lanes from west of Sand Lake Road to the end of the I-4 Ultimate project. Two westbound, barrier-separated, express lanes are being built from west of Sand Lake Road to connect to the existing express lanes near Kirkman Road. These will transition to a single, buffer-separated express lane in the westbound direction from west of Sand Lake Road and tie in just west of Central Florida Parkway. This express lane will be constructed in three separate projects, with the finished lane extending from west of Sand Lake Road to west of S.R. 536.

Construction began in Spring 2023 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2027. This project is being constructed in conjunction with FPID No. 444315-3, the combined construction cost is $219,342,910.12

Lane Closures
  • The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing overnight closures of Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) under Interstate 4 (I-4) on Tuesday night, September 8. The closures will begin as early as 11:30 p.m. each night and are expected to end by 6:30 a.m. the following morning, with the final closure ending the morning of Wednesday, September 9.

Left-turn movements from Sand Lake Road to the I-4 entrance ramps will be restricted, and motorists exiting I-4 to Sand Lake Road will be limited to right turns only.

These closures are necessary for bridge beam setting over Sand Lake Road as part of the eastbound I-4 reconstruction at the interchange.

See detour information below. To view the detour map, click here

Detour from Eastbound Sand Lake Road (West of I-4):

Motorists will take the ramp on the right to westbound I-4, then take Exit 72 onto eastbound S.R. 528 (Beachline Expressway). From there, drivers will take Exit 1 and stay right on the ramp to head north on International Drive. From northbound International Drive:

    • Motorists can return to Sand Lake Road by continuing north on International Drive.
    • Motorists can access eastbound I-4 by taking the ramp immediately on the right to westbound S.R. 528 and then taking the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp.

Detour from Westbound Sand Lake Road (East of I-4):

Motorists will turn right onto northbound International Drive, then turn left onto northbound Universal Boulevard. From northbound Universal Boulevard:

    • Motorists can return to Sand Lake Road by turning left onto westbound Hollywood Way and left again onto southbound Turkey Lake Road.
    • Motorists can access eastbound I-4 by taking the entrance ramp on the right.
    • Motorists can access westbound I-4 by turning right onto eastbound Tom Williams Way, then turning right again onto southbound Kirkman Road (S.R. 435), and proceeding to the westbound I-4 entrance ramp.

FDOT advises motorists to follow all posted detour signs. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
