PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is constructing a new four-lane roadway to realign State Road (S.R.) 50 from Villa City Road (County Road (C.R.) 565) to Second Avenue.

S.R. 50 splits into one-way segments through downtown Groveland, with westbound traffic traveling along Broad Street and eastbound along Orange Street. The 2.1-mile realignment will move S.R. 50 north of downtown Groveland. Once construction is complete, Broad and Orange streets will become city streets.

Requested by the City of Groveland, the project will reroute a significant amount of heavy-truck traffic away from downtown, enhancing the downtown area's livability and walkability. Additional changes include construction of a new intersection where the new roadway intersects S.R 19 (Howey Road) just south of Phelps Street. S.R. 19, from north of the new intersection to Grove Street, will also be resurfaced. Southbound S.R. 19 left-turn lanes will be added at the new intersection.

On S.R. 19 south of the new intersection, the roadway will be widened south to  Crittenden Street In addition, all new curbs and curb ramps will be constructed to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

The South Lake Trail will also be extended from Second Avenue westward along the new roadway to Villa City Road, just east of Groveland.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During construction, motorists can expect nighttime single-lane closures along each roadway, as follows:

·       Eastbound and westbound S.R. 50: Between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., within 600 feet of a signalized intersection; between 7 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. outside of a signalized intersection.

·       S.R. 19, north of S.R. 50: Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. within 600 feet of a signalized intersection; between 7 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. outside of a signalized intersection.

·       Intersection of S.R. 50 and S.R. 33: Between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. within 600 feet of the signalized intersection.

Motorists should anticipate areas of uneven pavement within the project limits, a common condition during construction when the contractor applies multiple asphalt layers in phases. These roadway conditions are temporary and will improve gradually as the project progresses.

While workers are on site, motorists are strongly encouraged to exercise caution and reduce speed to ensure the safety of everyone on the roadway. The project timeline is subject to change and may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
