About

This project aims to repave State Road (S.R.) 40 from U.S. 17 to S.R. 11 in Volusia County, extending the life of the roadway while enhancing overall safety. In addition to the resurfacing work, a series of improvements will be implemented to help reduce crashes and improve driver awareness.

Intersection warning signs will be placed near Chesser Hammock Road, alerting drivers to approaching cross traffic. Along the outside lane markings, audible vibratory striping will be installed to provide a tactile and audible warning to motorists who unintentionally drift out of their lane. On the westbound shoulder near the Volusia County Speedway, “No Parking” signs will discourage vehicles from stopping in unsafe locations, improving visibility and traffic flow in that area.

To further enhance safety, chevron signs will be added along curves, drawing attention to changes in roadway alignment and helping drivers navigate turns more easily. Near the speedway, “No Passing Zone” pavement markings will be introduced, accompanied by advance warning signs to make the restriction clear to approaching traffic.

Finally, the traffic signal at the intersection of S.R. 40 and U.S. 17 will be upgraded to include a protected/permissive left turn arrow. This modification will benefit drivers turning from southbound U.S. 17 onto eastbound S.R. 40, offering a safer and more efficient turning movement during both peak and off-peak hours.
