About
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing safety and operational improvements along U.S. 1 (State Road (S.R.) 5) from north of Century Oaks Circle to north of Myers Drive. The project includes resurfacing the roadway and installing new drainage, guardrail, and a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) at the existing crosswalk at the Yellow Dog Café.
A PHB is an overhead traffic device that remains dark until a pedestrian activates the beacon, signaling for drivers to come to a stop and for pedestrians to cross. For more information about PHBs and how to use them, visit https://www.alerttodayflorida.com/Pedestrian.
The project will also include the installation of new lighting at signalized intersections along the corridor to improve visibility at existing crosswalks. In addition, pedestrian curb ramps will be reconstructed to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
Other safety enhancements include narrowing the travel lanes from 12 feet to 11 to provide wider paved shoulders for bicyclists and adding bicycle keyholes at right-turn lanes to improve bicycle safety.
