Project  Locally known as the Christa McAuliffe Drawbridge, this project will remove and replace the locking system from under the bridge decks and relocate them allowing future bridge work to take place without closures.  In addition to the bridge lock replacement, this project will perform routine maintenance under the bridge deck to replace and repair the current timber and lumber system of the bridge fenders, which help guide vessels under the bridge, and perform steel modifications for enhanced strengthening of the bridge pier support  system. Lane Closures
  •  Northbound Traffic Shift Notice

Monday, April 05, 2021, the team will begin to transition the roadway for the northbound traffic shift. Southbound traffic will be placed back into the southbound lanes with a single left lane closed. One left lane in the northbound direction will also be closed to allow for the re-construction of the vehicle crossover area located in the middle of the roadway. This pattern will be in place for approximately three days or until the team completes the work. Northbound traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes once the crossover area is complete. Once traffic is shifted, one lane in each northbound and southbound directions will carry traffic over the bridge. Signage and other devices will help guide traffic through the shift. Please see the attached map for further details. This traffic shift will allow work to be done on the northbound side of the bridge and is expected to be in place for approximately two months.  Project schedules are subject to change pending weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

    Drawbridge Operations

This work requires a temporarily deviation from drawbridge operation. From November 16, 2020 through June 30, 2021, the Christa McAuliffe Drawbridge will operate under the following conditions:  Normal Drawbridge Hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Recreational Vessel Passage is restricted between the hours of  6 a.m.-8 a.m. & 3 p.m.-6 p.m.  At all other times the drawbridge will open every 30 minutes, if there is a vessel needing passage. Deviation entails that only single leaf openings will be permitted outside of the restricted times. Single Leaf openings will be provided as requested on the Hour and Half Hour. Should a vessel need a double leaf opening during normal hours, they are required to give a 4 hour notice to the bridge tender so the contractor can make preparations for the opening. If an opening is needed outside of Normal Drawbridge Hours, a three hour notice must be given. Please check in with the most current USCG Local Notice to Mariners and posted signs on the bridge for additional information.
