About

The goal of the project is to enhance safety and operations for all users and extend the service life of the roadway along the corridor. In addition to resurfacing this segment of State Road (S.R.) A1A, the project will introduce subtle alignment shifts to help encourage safer driving speeds and enhance pedestrian safety. Traffic signal and lighting upgrades, as well as drainage improvements are included. The speed limit of 35 mph throughout the corridor will be reduced to 30 mph during construction and remain 30 mph after project completion.

Pedestrian safety enhancements include wider sidewalks, midblock crossings with pedestrian activated signals, and upgraded curb ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Lane Closures
  • Beginning Tuesday, Dec. 9: Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is beginning construction on the first of several raised safety features along State Road (S.R.) A1A (Atlantic Avenue) in Daytona Beach.

Crews will begin with the installation of raised crosswalks from north of East International Speedway Boulevard to Oakridge Boulevard on S.R. A1A, as soon as Tuesday, December 9, lasting through Friday, December 12.

Temporary single, daytime lane closures will be necessary to complete this work.

During construction, the crosswalks at these locations will not be accessible to pedestrians. Pedestrian detour routes will be in place to guide pedestrians around the closures.

The raised crosswalks will be installed at the following locations:

    ·   S.R. A1A between Fifth Avenue and Kemp Street

    ·   S.R. A1A between Auditorium Boulevard and Earl Street

    ·   S.R. A1A between Earl Street and Ora Street

    ·   S.R. A1A between Butler Boulevard and Oakridge Boulevard

As part of these safety improvements, the speed limit throughout the corridor is now 30 mph, reduced from 35 mph to enhance safety and accommodate the upgrades.

Once the project is completed, these raised crosswalks will feature traffic control devices designed to increase driver awareness of pedestrians crossing roadways at marked crosswalks called Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs).

FDOT advises motorists to be cautious and alert and to follow all posted detour signs.

  • Friday, Dec. 5 to Friday, Dec. 12: Motorists can expect alternating inside and outside single lane closures on northbound and southbound State Road (S.R.) A1A from International Speedway Boulevard (U.S. 92) to Milsap Road for concrete removal and pouring, clearing and grubbing, limerock installation, curbing, paving operations, and paver removal.

FDOT encourages all roadway users to drive, walk and ride with caution and courtesy!

  • Motorists can expect single lane closures on northbound and southbound State Road (S.R.) A1A at the intersection of S.R. A1A and Auditorium Boulevard for paver removal.
