DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is beginning construction on the first of several raised safety features along State Road (S.R.) A1A (Atlantic Avenue) in Daytona Beach.

Crews will begin with the installation of raised crosswalks from north of East International Speedway Boulevard to Oakridge Boulevard on S.R. A1A, as soon as Tuesday, December 9, lasting through Friday, December 12.

Temporary single, daytime lane closures will be necessary to complete this work.

During construction, the crosswalks at these locations will not be accessible to pedestrians. Pedestrian detour routes will be in place to guide pedestrians around the closures.

The raised crosswalks will be installed at the following locations:

  • S.R. A1A between Fifth Avenue and Kemp Street
  • S.R. A1A between Auditorium Boulevard and Earl Street
  • S.R. A1A between Earl Street and Ora Street
  • S.R. A1A between Butler Boulevard and Oakridge Boulevard

As part of these safety improvements, the speed limit throughout the corridor is now 30 mph, reduced from 35 mph to enhance safety and accommodate the upgrades.

Once the project is completed, these raised crosswalks will feature traffic control devices designed to increase driver awareness of pedestrians crossing roadways at marked crosswalks called Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs).

These roadway features are being constructed as part of a safety improvement and resurfacing project along S.R. A1A intended to enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists.
