New Shared-Use Trail Completed on U.S. 17 in Pierson

Pierson With the opening of school, pedestrians and bicyclists have a new, safer option for traveling along U.S. 17 in Pierson, Volusia County. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has completed construction of a new shared-use non-motorized (SUN) trail along the east side of U.S. 17 from Washington Avenue to Palmetto Avenue.

The new, 12-foot-wide trail extends just over 1-mile, connecting to both the existing sidewalk at Washington Avenue, and to the new Pierson Elementary School located on U.S. 17 just south of near Palmetto Avenue.

The contractor completed the project early, finishing before the new school year begins on Aug. 13. Construction on the $661,000 project began in late March and also included drainage improvements.

The new trail is part of the FDOT's SUN Trail program to provide safe options for pedestrians and bicyclists, and improve trail connectivity within the state.
