NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) advises motorists and pedestrians of a one-night closure of the North Causeway (State Road 44) moveable bridge over the Indian River, also known as the Coronado Beach Bridge, scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 15, to 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 16.

This closure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of a hydraulic cylinder within the bridge. A detour will be in place for vehicle traffic; marine traffic access will be maintained at all times. Signage will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians to a detour using the nearby South Causeway Bridge. In addition to the South Causeway, on the mainland (west side of bridge), the detour will use U.S. 1 (Dixie Highway), Live Oak Street, Canal Street, Riverside Drive, and Lytle Avenue. On beachside (east side of bridge), the detour will use Peninsula Avenue, Flagler Avenue, Atlantic Avenue (U.S. A1A), and East 3rd Avenue. See attached detour map for more information.

Local traffic will still be able to access properties along North Causeway between Riverside Drive and the North Causeway Bridge during the closure. Given the overnight timing and the brief nature of the closure, an alternative route for low-speed vehicles such as golf carts will not be provided.

The construction schedule is subject to change pending weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please follow posted signage, avoid distractions, and allow extra travel time to reach your destination.

This work is part of a larger maintenance project to remove and replace all of the North Causeway Bridge’s hydraulic cylinders to ensure uninterrupted service and extended functionality for years to come. These hydraulic cylinders are a vital component of the machinery that enables the bridge to open and close, allowing marine vessels to pass through the Indian River safely. FDOT appreciates the public's patience and cooperation as we undertake this critical maintenance project to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the North Causeway.
