The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is making improvements to the moveable bridges that cross the Canaveral Barge Canal on North Courtenay Parkway in Merritt Island. There are two project numbers associated with these improvements. Project  Locally known as the Christa McAuliffe Drawbridge, this project will remove and replace the locking system from under the bridge decks and relocate them allowing future bridge work to take place without closures.  In addition to the bridge lock replacement, this project will perform routine maintenance under the bridge deck to replace and repair the current timber and lumber system of the bridge fenders, which help guide vessels under the bridge, and perform steel modifications for enhanced strengthening of the bridge pier support  system. There are two project numbers associated with these improvements 443269-1 & 443265-1.
