The purpose of this planning study is to evaluate the potential for extending Washingtonia Drive from the proposed St. Johns Parkway, in the vicinity of Ellis Road, north to Wickham Road, a distance of approximately 9 miles. As shown on the project location map, the study area is located within unincorporated Brevard County and within the City of Melbourne.
The planning study, the first phase of developing a project, involves extensive analysis to assess the existing natural, cultural, physical and social environmental features; working with members of the affected public and other stakeholders; fatal flaw / land suitability analysis, which identifies areas to avoid and those areas that may be used to develop potential corridors where a new roadway could be located in the future.
The planning study, the first phase of the project, is anticipated to be complete in late 2017 or early 2018. The project would then move into the next phase of development known as a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study, which is anticipated to begin in late 2019. Currently, design, right of way and construction are not funded in the Florida Department of Transportation’s Five Year Work Program.
