2014 National Work Zone Awareness Week
April 7–11, 2014
Central Florida- The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) present National Work Zone Awareness Week annually each spring to call attention to motorist and worker safety within work zones across the county. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) eagerly joins this year's effort to both increase driver awareness and decrease the number of motor vehicle fatalities within work zones.
This year’s theme, “Work Zone Speeding: A Costly Mistake”, emphasizes the consequences of speeding within a work zone. As highlighted by this year’s theme, speeding in work zones can be a costly mistake to everyone. Speeding is a major contributing factor of work zone crashes. In addition, speeding was involved in more than one-third (36%) of the fatal crashes that occurred in construction and maintenance zones in 2011.
FDOT District Five is collaborating with several Central Florida Law Enforcement agencies, including the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office to promote work zone safety within active construction corridors. Increased social media and web presence, along with variable message boards and other education efforts will serve to remind Central Florida motorists of this year's work zone safety message.
