Work begins on North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach

Volusia County –
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is replacing the bridge decks on the low bridges over Berrys and Conners canals at the western end of the North Causeway (State Road 44) in New Smyrna Beach. Work is expected to begin July 17 and be completed in summer 2018.

The contractor, M&J Construction Company, will remove the existing bridge deck using a high-pressure water demolition technique. Workers will then replace the concrete slabs and deck joints, and repair the reinforcing steel.

Work on this project will occur mostly during the day behind barrier wall.  Occasional nighttime lane closures will be needed to place the barrier wall. During construction, traffic will be shifted on the bridges in phases to accommodate the work.  At least one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. Additionally, pedestrians are advised that walkways will be open only on one side of the bridge. Kayakers and those on small water craft that travel under the bridges are also asked to use caution.

Electronic message boards and posted signs will be used to alert drivers of any lane closures or traffic shifts. Updates can be found on www.cflroads.com or by contacting Carolyn Fitzwilliam, Public Information Coordinator, at 386-740-3566 or carolyn.fitzwilliam@dot.state.fl.us. Media inquiries should be directed to the District Five Public Information Office at 386-943-5473 or 386-943-5497.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) urges all drivers to use caution when traveling through road construction. Please slow down and stay alert.
