NEW INFO: Bridge Strike North of Ocala-Two Northbound Lanes on I-75 Now Open
Reddick/Marion County - Two northbound lanes of I-75 are now open just north of Ocala Wednesday night. At approximately 4:40 p.m. Wednesday afternoon (11-25-2015), a roll-off container dump truck traveling on CR 329 in Marion County struck the northbound I-75 bridge over CR 329 with its outstretched boom, causing damage to I-75 and the closure of two northbound lanes. Around 10:30 p.m. an additional lane was re-opened. One travel lane remains closed. FDOT is examining the option of opening the shoulder on the bridge for an additional travel lane.
The incident caused lengthy traffic back-ups. Motorists traveling northbound on I-75 may take any one of the Ocala exits, and make their way to US 441. Motorist may then take northbound US 441 to CR 318, where they may head west, and link up with northbound I-75, past the point of the bridge mishap. Many GPS applications recommend this alternate route.
It appears damage to the bridge will require major repair, as a couple beams supporting the outside (right) lane received considerable damage. No timetable on permanent repairs is known at this time, but an emergency contract has been authorized to expedite repairs.
Updates will be provided, as developments warrant.
