Central Florida– The new school year is beginning in Central Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is reminding drivers, parents and students about the importance of safety.
Motorists need to be aware of children biking and walking. Drivers should be especially cautious as they approach intersections, with or without marked crosswalks, and pay particular attention to those areas that are designated as school crossings. When approaching traffic signals, drivers need to make note of children who are approaching the roadway.
Motorists also need to pay attention to lower speed limits in school zones, obey traffic laws and stop for school buses that are loading, or off-loading children.
Finally, parents should also take extra care in educating their children about pedestrian and bicycle safety. Children should be reminded to always look left, right, and left again when crossing the road. Those riding bikes should be reminded to always wear a helmet and to walk their bikes through crosswalks. Student pedestrians and cyclists should be reminded to obey the instructions of School Crossing Guards and officers stationed along their route.
FDOT urges you to be safe, be seen, and be aware!
